Mangosteen Supplements: How Will You Choose?

From the time a company based in Utah in the U.S. introduced a bottled liquid dietary Mangosteen supplement in November 2002, it didn't take long for other companies to produce their own brand of this amazing fruit's extracts in various concoctions, formulations and forms.

Perhaps encouraged by the fast-growing demand for Mangosteen extract-based supplements, these companies began offering their own products in both liquid and capsule forms.

But this led to one problem...

As consumers looking to buy Mangosteen supplements to benefit from the healing and immune-system-boosting properties of this exotic fruit, your search for natural supplements based on this fruit has never been as interesting and as confusing at the same time.

How to Choose the Right Mangosteen Supplement

With the growing number of product or brand choices now available to you, how will you be able to make the right choice as to which Mangosteen supplement or extract to buy that will provide you the optimum benefits from the whole fruit?

It's not an easy choice, especially when your health is on the line. But here are some guidelines that can help you decide which Mangosteen extract-based product deserves your trust --- and your pocketbook.

  • Does the product contain the whole fruit puree of the fruit? The whole fruit contains natural healing compounds called Xanthones. But most of them are found in the pericarp (rind or skin). Make sure that the supplement is based on the whole fruit extract of the Mangosteen.

  • Is it the primary ingredient in the product? To obtain the most benefit from Xanthones, Mangosteen should be the primary ingredient on which the supplement is based.

  • Carefully consider the name and reputation of the manufacturer. Is it a nationally or internationally known name? Companies with a reputation they need to uphold are more likely to manufacture products under strict, quality-controlled conditions. If a manufacturer has national and/or international quality certifications, it probably should be at the top of your list.

  • Does the product label or company website provide you a way to contact the company if you have questions or concerns about their product? Reputable manufacturers will provide their contact information on the supplement's label, packaging or website.

  • Call, e-mail or write the manufacturer and ask about their quality-control procedures and manufacturing processes.

  • Try to avoid products that are priced significantly lower than comparable products --- they are likely to be of lower quality.

A Note on ORAC Values in Mangosteen Supplements

ORAC is a measurement of a food's antioxidant value. This Asian fruit has been found to register higher on the ORAC scale than any common food or juice.

Our body can only work with up to 9,000 ORACs per day. Three ounces of Mangosteen juice per day, for example, already makes a huge contribution on one's daily intake of antioxidants.

Note, too, that it's not difficult to create a Mangosteen supplement product with high ORAC values. For example, if you just put a few ounces of pure Clove oil in your mix, its ORAC value will rise to incredible levels.

The real power and value of this fruit are found in the abundant Xanthones in it. Make sure that the supplement you choose contains all the Xanthones in the Mangosteen and are consistent from bottle to bottle or capsule to capsule.

How the dietary supplements based on this amazing fruit is manufactured makes a lot of difference in obtaining the health benefits from Mangosteen.

General Guidelines for Supplementation

The Xanthones in Mangosteen have a half-life of about 4-6 hours (length of time half of the substance remains in the bloodstream).

It's better, for example, to drink 3 fluid ounces a day by taking 1 fluid ounce (roughly 3 tablespoonfuls) 3 times a day rather than taking 3 fluid ounces in one big gulp once a day.

The Mangosteen juice is taken in fluid-ounce servings, not by the glass or cup (unless, of course, you're taking it simply as a beverage, or for severe pain or other severe health challenges).

For better absorption of the Xanthones in the body, health practitioners recommend taking the Mangosteen supplement just before or during meals.

Here are more specific guidelines for Mangosteen Juice supplement intake (please note that these are not set in stone - dosages will vary depending on your specific health condition):

  • For prevention (i.e., no health challenges) --- 1 oz, once or twice a day with food

  • Children 6-12 years old --- 1/2 of adult dosage; children less than 6 years old (and infants weaned onto fruit juice) --- 1/4 of adult dosage

  • For minimal health concerns --- 2 oz, twice or thrice a day with food

  • For severe health challenges (e.g., severe pain) --- 3 oz, thrice a day with food
