Mangosteen and Health: Inflammation and Pain

Mangosteen has long been known by pharmacological researchers and scientists for its health-giving, anti-inflammaion properties. More than any other fruit, it has the ability to change the course of inflammation by effectively blocking the inflammatory process and the pain associated with it.

Mangosteen contains natural compounds called Xanthones. These are powerful healing agents that can only be found in fruits and vegetables, and have been widely studied for their medicinal value.

With their more than 40 Xanthones, Mangosteens are the best source of Xanthones known to science.

It is a proven COX-2 inhibitor - it stops the inflammatory process directly by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme.

It also inhibits inflammation's sometimes deadly influence in other ways. By fighting off infection with its Xanthones, it stops foreign bacteria or viruses from inducing the inflammatory response.

Research Studies on Mangosteen

Numerous studies have shown that gamma-mangostin, one of the Xanthones in this amazing fruit, dramatically slows down the production of the COX-2 enzyme that precedes and leads to inflammation.

One study showed that gamma-mangostin was an even more potent anti-inflammatory agent than several anti-inflammatory drugs being prescribed for arthritis and gout.

Research scientists also suggested that the anti-inflammatory effects of gamma-mangostin on brain cells may have potential in helping with inflammatory conditions of the brain such as Alzheimer's Disease.

In one research study, scientists used Xanthone extracts from the rind or pericarp of the Mangosteen to study its effects on inflammation.

Their experiments with laboratory animals showed that Xanthones suppressed acute and chronic inflammation and swelling, inhibited fatal inflammatory reaction, and inhibited arthritis.

In another study, scientists noted that the Xanthones did not interfere with the clotting mechanism of the blood. It also did not damage the stomach lining and produce stomach ulcers, which are serious side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs.

In fact, the scientists found that the Xanthones even helped heal stomach ulcers.

In a brain cell preparation containing rat glioma cells, Japanese researchers demonstrated that gamma-mangostin blocked the production of prostaglandin E2, a compound that plays a part in causing inflammation. This occurred because gamma-mangostin prevented the COX-2 gene in the glioma cells from being "turned on", inhibiting the COX-2 enzymes and effectively interrupting the chain of events that leads to this condition.

In another study, scientists concluded that the Mangosteen would be a "useful lead compound for anti-inflammatory drug development." (Nakatani et al, 2004)

The Underlying Cause of Many Diseases

Inflammation is important in helping the body to heal, but it can also cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. It has also been linked to many types of serious and debilitating diseases.

An article in Time magazine stated:

"As scientists delve deeper into the fundamental causes of illnesses, they are starting to see links to an age-old immunological defense mechanism called inflammation... Hardly a week goes by without the publication of yet another study uncovering a new way that chronic inflammation does harm to the body..." - Time Magazine, February 2004 .

Many health problems are a direct result of inflammatory disease processes. These inflammatory processes have been linked to:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Breast cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Crohn's disease
  • Degenerative arthritis
  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Infection
  • Kidney disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Uterine cancer

Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Drugs commonly called NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin or ketorolac block inflammation but can cause serious adverse effects.

Anti-inflammatory drugs were developed to block the COX-2 enzyme and the inflammatory response of pain and swelling.

When the first commercial synthetic COX-2 inhibitors such as Vioxx and Celebrex were introduced, many health care practitioners thought they had found the holy grail for long-term sufferers. Preliminary studies seemed to indicate that these drugs only inhibited the COX-2 enzyme and that no gastro-intestinal problems would occur.

But this has not turned out to be the case. Scientists realized that there is no such thing as a synthetic, pure COX-2 inhibitor. Drugs thought to be only COX-2 inhibitors did, in fact, inhibit the COX-1 enzyme as well and also caused a number of serious health problems such as heart disease that led to some of these drugs being taken off the market.

Natural Remedy for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

Natural herbal remedies can effectively inhibit the inflammatory process safely and powerfully and offer alternatives to synthetic, anti-inflammatory drugs.

Mangosteen is one of these natural, powerful and safe remedies. It is a potent, selective COX-2 inhibitor with none of the side effects that come with typical anti-inflammatory synthetic drugs.

The Xanthones in this amazing fruit act as powerful anti-inflammatory agents that do not cause liver or kidney damage. The Xanthone, gamma-mangostin, found in the pericarp of the fruit, acts as a selective COX-2 inhibitor.

Mangosteen's health-giving xanthones reduce inflammation and pain, and each of the trillions of cells in the human body will be positively affected in a powerful way by these natural healing compounds.
